Very enjoyable story based on a real-life person who left everything he had worked for in Tennessee and Kentucky to come to Texas with his family to explore new lands and settle the frontier. A good friend of General Sam Houston, Colonel Bill Bowen was one of those essential cogs in the hard fight for freedom from Mexico, not as a common soldier, but as logistics and support of the war effort. Without the tireless work and support from Bill and others who served the Army in the background to make sure that Houston and his men had everything they needed, the battle would have been much tougher. But Bill's story covers much more than just his service in the Texas Army. The son of a plantation owner, he rubbed shoulders with the likes of Audubon, Andrew Jackson, and Sam Clements. With a lifelong desire to travel and explore, he brought his young wife and children to Texas to stake his claim. He was involved in business and government in counties north of what is now Houston, Texas. He battled Indians, settled land, sold land, pressed on to the west towards San Antonio and north towards Waco.
The story of Bill Bowen is brought to life by his great-great-great-great-granddaughter, a passionate genealogist, and based on years of research and effort to document his full and interesting life as realistically and accurately as possible. It captures the feeling of what it must have been like to live in these raw times and witness history unfolding right in front of you, not just in terms of the battles for freedom, but the everyday battles to survive and thrive, balanced with the simple delights of the day.
An easy-to-read book that tells the story of Texas from the perspective of the people who helped tame this beautiful state.
An exceptional first offering from this author. A very interesting insight into one of the most fascinating periods of Texas history, from the war for independence from Mexico through the years as an independent nation. It follows one of the author's own ancestors from Tennessee to Texas in those epic years and his interaction with some of Texas' heroes and first hand observance of the times. Anyone interested in Texas history would enjoy this easy to read intimate storyline. Very enjoyable, recommend it highly.
